Discover the City Behind the Campus
AR Siegen helps new students orient themselves to the city of Siegen.
Siegen is a relatively small city with a population of around 100,000 residents, yet roughly one-third of the population consists of university students. While many students come from within Germany, a large portion arrive from abroad to pursue one of the university’s many English-language degree programs. For many international students, Siegen is a completely unfamiliar place. Some move here without ever having visited the city beforehand.
AR Siegen was created to help students become familiar with their new environment in an engaging and accessible way. Designed as a university-exclusive app, it connects students with campus events, local activities, and cultural highlights throughout the city.
Using augmented reality overlays, the app allows students to explore Siegen’s streets while discovering its art, architecture, and history. By blending digital storytelling with physical exploration, AR Siegen transforms the city itself into an interactive introduction to student life in Siegen.

Revealing History Through AR
AR Siegen highlights stories about Siegen that are often overlooked. The city is the birthplace of Peter Paul Rubens (1577), yet none of his original paintings are held in local museums. At the Rubenshaus, AR overlays allow users to view digital reproductions of his work within the city where he was born.
The app also brings attention to key historical locations. At Oberes Schloss, AR content explains the castle’s role as a residence of the Nassau rulers and its later transformation into a museum. Other locations highlight important historical events, such as the destruction of Siegen’s synagogue during Kristallnacht.
